2010 PROJECT PRIORITIES FOR EDC

FosbrookIn 2009, EDC celebrated its first decade of working to build a more sustainable economy in Warren County. We were pleased last year to feature GLOBALFOUNDRIES at our annual luncheon in April, to host Congressman Scott Murphy at a public event in September, and to launch a three-mountain ski marketing initiative in October. A complete review of our accomplishments during the year will be forthcoming in our Annual Report.

Looking ahead, in 2010 our highest priorities include:

  • Developing the Exit 18 zone into an office/light industrial hub with sustainable job opportunities, serving as an attractive gateway to the City of Glens Falls
  • Enhancing the quality of life and bringing new jobs to northern and central Warren County, inside the “Blue Line” of the Adirondack Park
  • Encouraging light industrial development and job growth for targeted industries in the South Queensbury/airport corridor, and marketing the area as an integrated enterprise zone with easy access to airport services
  • Continuing to serve as the sole resource and point of entry for all business inquiries, promotion, and attraction efforts and economic development activity within Warren County
  • Growing the county’s tourism economy, including expansion of four-season employment opportunities
  • Promoting the redevelopment of the City of Glens Falls as the county’s vibrant urban anchor and as a catalyst for regional economic growth

Empire Zone Program and Its Successor

A Post-Star guest editorial by
empire zone EDC’s Len Fosbrook in 2009 highlighted the billion-dollar success of the Empire Zone Program in Warren County under EDC’s effective administration.

While the Empire Zone program is set to end in June, EDC has been monitoring the developments surrounding the successor program, named Excelsior. While Excelsior has not yet been approved by the New York State legislature, in its current form the program would make it difficult for many Warren County companies to quality due to the employment requirements. EDC will make available information to local companies about Excelsior as soon as the program’s details are confirmed and finalized.

EDC Meets with Quebec Officials
for Business Development

Working with EDC’s partners at the Empire State Development and Saratoga Economic Development Corporation, EDC’s economic development specialist John Wheatley traveled to Montreal in December to meet with business officials regarding cross-border trade initiatives.

A full day of meetings proved very worthwhile, with the Quebec economic development officials introducing representatives from several industries, including microelectronic and photonics. The Quebec business leaders view New York State as an appealing gateway location to access the U.S. market, with tax advantages as well as logistical benefits. Additional face-to-face meetings, to build further on this very positive initial session, are slated for later in 2010.
