Building Our Regional Technology Economy
EDC recently partnered with the Center for Economic Growth on an exciting knowledge-based program regarding how we can better plan for our region’s future in high tech industries.
During the week of May 9th, CEG invited technology industry experts Dr. Martin Gillo, Member of Parliament and Former Minister of Economic Affairs, Saxony, Germany, and David Lawrence, Principal of Lawrence Resources, Hillsboro, Oregon, to meet with Capital Region stakeholders to provide insight on the growth of regional technology industry clusters.
Dr. Gillo’s past experience includes being the Managing Director of AMD Saxony Manufacturing in Dresden where he helped plan technology growth in the region when AMD was locating its chip-fab operation there. Mr. Lawrence was the Deputy City Manager of Hillsboro (OR), with responsibility for the Ronler Acres project – a 1200-acre site that is the home to Intel’s largest global site. He has played a key role in recruiting high-tech companies to Oregon’s Silicon Forest.
Through a series of meetings/tours in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady and Warren counties, and a culmination event at Hudson Valley Community College’s TEC-SMART at STEP in Malta on May 13th, Dr. Gillo and Mr. Lawrence shared their first-hand experiences and offered advice to ensure continued regional success in the semiconductor and other industries.
