IBM Exec Speaks at EDC’s
Emerging Business Trends Lunch
At EDC Warren County’s first Emerging Business Trends event, leading technology executive Dr. John E. Kelly III, IBM Senior Vice President and Director of IBM Research, spoke about the “golden age of innovation” in New York.
During his EDC lunch presentation to over 250 people on September 5 at the Great Escape Lodge, Dr. Kelly noted that U.S. economy is at a critical juncture, as it addresses challenges in many sectors: housing, energy, climate change, healthcare, the war on terror, finance, and competition from the developing world. He noted that the U.S. is losing its technical competence, as our students’ performance in science and math drops in comparison to students in other countries, and as U.S. investment in engineering research and physical sciences declines.
For the 21st century, Dr. Kelly noted, network ubiquity, the rising tide of globalization, and innovation will be the drivers of change, leading the “knowledge wave” that will succeed the agricultural and industrial waves of the 19th and 20th century economies.
Dr. Kelly spoke of many of IBM’s latest developments in New York state, including a petaflop computer, which completes one quadrillion operations per second. He reviewed several recent applications of IBM technology in the fields of nanotech, healthcare and medicine, energy and the environment, government, and finance.
In July, Dr. Kelly joined New York Governor David Paterson in announcing an investment of $1.5 billion in the IBM’s research operations at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the University of Albany and two other upstate locations. The investments are expected to create at least 1,000 new jobs.
EDC thanks the sponsors of this inaugural Emerging Business Trends event, whose valuable support made the launch of the new speaker series possible: Behan Communications Inc., Glens Falls National Bank & Trust Company, and Lemery Greisler LLC. Co-sponsors were The Post Star and the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce.
